The 3rd International Joint Symposium of
JSBMS and MSACL

Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto
September 13, 2024

Overview

We are pleased to announce the 3rd International Joint Symposium of the Japanese Society of Biochemical Mass Spectrometry (JSBMS) and the Mass Spectrometry: Applications to the Clinical Lab (MSACL), to be held as part of the 49th annual meeting of JSBMS from September 13-14, 2024. This symposium serves as a collaborative platform to explore the expansive applications of mass spectrometry across various domains, including clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, metabolomics/proteomics, mass spectrometry imaging, toxicology, and newborn mass screening, among others. We aim to foster dialogue and exchange between academia and industry leaders.

The previous two symposia were conducted virtually with video lectures due to the coronavirus pandemic. We are delighted to host this year's symposium in person for the first time. Our focus for the symposium is "Clinical Application of MALDI-TOF MS". We have the honor of featuring three distinguished researchers, nominated by JSBMS and MSACL, who will lead the discussions. We anticipate a vibrant exchange of ideas during their presentations on the afternoon of Friday, September 13. For the latest updates, please visit our website (https://www.jsbms49.com).

◆ Organizers

Kazuo Igarashi, Ph.D.

Kenji Nakayama, Ph. D.

◆ Keynote Speakers

Dr. Arash Zarrine-Afsar <arash.zarrine.afsar@utoronto.ca>

He is trained (Canada and Switzerland) as a physical biochemist with interest in the development of various spectroscopic and spectrometric methods to understand the dynamics of biological systems, in particular transition to the disease state. He is currently Principal Investigator at University Health Network (Princess Margaret Hospital) and leads a group of researchers focused on development of rapid diagnostic methods using mass spectrometry. He holds a position at the rank of Associate Professor with the Department of Surgery and Graduate Department of Medical Biophysics at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine. The research in his laboratory over the past 5 years has further matured Picosecond Infrared Laser Mass Spectrometry (PIRL-MS) as a rapid pathology determination tool where 10-second laser sampling of tissue molecular content has allowed differentiation of cancer types and subtypes faster than currently possible in the standard of care.

Dr. Makoto Arita <arita-mk@pha.keio.ac.jp>

He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tokyo in 1997. Currently, he is a Professor and Dean of Faculty (Pharmaceutical Sciences), and a Core Director of Human Biology-Microbiome-Quantum Research Center (WPI-Bio2Q) at Keio University, and a Team Leader of RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences. Dr. Arita has experience leading multidisciplinary research teams as a principal investigator for “Biology of LipoQuality” a program project supported by JSPS Grant-in-aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (FY2015-2020). He serves as an Executive Editor for the Progress in Lipid Research. Now he is leading JST-ERATO Lipidome Atlas Project (FY2021-2026) to pioneer the spatiotemporal biology of lipid diversity through a creation of the Lipidome Atlas, and to discover unknown molecules associated with important biological processes.

Dr. Ikuko Yao <yaoik@kwansei.ac.jp>

She has conducted molecular analyses focused on synaptic plasticity, considered foundational to memory and learning. Her research revolves around understanding how neural activity is optimized in response to external stimuli, with a specific emphasis on neural synapses. To date, she has employed mass spectrometry in innovative ways, including pioneering work at JST PRESTO, where she achieved the world's first visualization of acetylcholine through direct mass analysis of tissues, aiming to visualizer neurotransmitters. She has successfully applied these techniques to analyze changes in neurotransmitter levels in genetically modified mice, pathological models, and developmental stages. In 2004, she obtained her doctoral degree from the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Subsequently, she has held positions at the Mitsubishi Chemical Life Sciences Institute, Kansai Medical University, and Hamamatsu Medical University before assuming her current position in 2019.

◆ Information

1 . Symposium Presentations

Each presentation will be allocated a duration of 40 minutes, inclusive of time for discussion. The content presented will be published as a proceeding paper in the Journal of the JSBMS. Questions about the presentation may be addressed via email. The email address provided in the abstract will serve as the primary mode of communication for subsequent discussions. We kindly request that abstracts be submitted to the secretariat of the annual meeting by June 30 (jsbms49@gmail.com).

The abstract should be concise, not exceeding one A4 page, and must include the following: the title, author names, their affiliations, and the main text. The text should be organized into sections: Background (Introduction), Methods, Results, and Conclusion. We welcome the inclusion of figures, tables, and references if they contribute to the clarity and understanding of the work presented. The email address of the corresponding author must be provided in the footer of the abstract. Please ensure that your abstract is formatted in Microsoft Word (.docx) format. Templates for both the abstract and registration can be downloaded <<🔧 Under construction. Please wait.⛏️>> from the symposium's official website (https://www.jsbms49.com).

2. Poster Presentations

We are pleased to invite poster presentations from members of the MSACL for the upcoming joint symposium on September 13-14. These presentations will cover a wide range of topics related to the application of mass spectrometry in various scientific domains such as clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, metabolomics/proteomics, mass spectrometry imaging, toxicology, and newborn mass screening, among others. The deadline for poster presentation submissions is June 30. We request that interested participants submit their abstracts alongside the completed registration form to the secretariat of the annual meeting by this date (jsbms49@gmail.com).
